Reading Response #1- Summer of My German Soldier

  • How do you feel about the book you are reading? Would you recommend it to others? To whom? Why or why not?
I am reading a book about the Holocaust called Summer of My Greman Soldier by Bette Greene. It is about a girl named Patricia whos family doesn't understand her and her little sister Sharon gets all of the attention. Nobody understands her until a very polite German sidesteps into her life. He understands and listens to her, which made Patty get a crush on him.

I would recommend Summer of My German Soldier to mostly Jewish people or people insterested in the Holocaust. I say this because these types of people would probably understand it a little more and feel a bit more of an impact after reading it. I'm not necessarily saying people who are not Jewish shouldn't read it, I just mean that it may be a tad easier to understand if you just happen to be Jewish. I would also recommend this book to people above the ages of 11 or 12 becaust this book has some offensive material and is a bit complex and hard to understand at times. For example, when Patty told a girl who lived nearby that she had a crush on a German, the other girl said, "'A German prisoner!' repeated Edna Louise. 'That's almost as bad as going out with a nigger!'" Some people may take this very personally, so I would not recommend this book to somebody who takes what happens in books too seriously.
